People using pre-loaded Amazon Fire TV Sticks could be hit with fines of up to £50,000 following a significant illegal streaming restriction that has led to three arrests and a string of warnings. Over the past month, the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) has teamed up with UK police forces to crack down on unlicensed providers of top TV content, which includes films, TV and live sports.

During the crackdown, 40 illegal IPTV operators were served with cease and desist notices, pressuring them to end their unsanctioned activities or face criminal charges. Also included were three arrests: a 42-year-old man from Nottingham, a 51-year-old man from Widnes and a 52-year-old man in Stockton-on-Tees. The raids led to the seizure of “fully charged” smart TVs from these addresses for forensic investigation.

In the UK, copyright infringement law prohibits illegal streaming; offenders could face fines of up to £50,000 and sentences of up to a decade behind bars. Viewers who indulge in illegally streamed content, although subject to lesser penalties, could end up paying thousands of pounds, reports Birmingham Live.

The most recent initiative has seen operations spread across multiple locations across the UK, including Birmingham and Cannock. Kieron Sharp, CEO of FACT, said: “This is just the beginning of our enforcement efforts, with more actions planned.”
