Part of a Coventry school is to be knocked down over asbestos fears

A derelict Coventry building with ‘high levels of asbestos’ will soon be demolished. The work takes place at President Kennedy School in Holbrooks.

Director Samantha Rooke said the pool building and cooling tower would be demolished next month as they had “not been used for a number of years”. Contractors were seen on site earlier this week (Monday 22nd July).

Demolition work on the decades-old building will begin in mid-August and is expected to be completed by October this year, Ms Rooke said. Permission to demolish the building was granted by Coventry City Council in September 2023.

CoventryLive understands the pool building closed for good in 2016. Weather damage, rats and “other wildlife” contributed to its deterioration, according to a letter from the Futures Trust, which runs President Kennedy School.

A spokesman for the Kennedy School for Presidents said: “You may be aware that our pool and cooling tower have not been used for several years. Now we are in the position of having these buildings demolished.

“Work on the new site started on Monday 22nd July and should be completed by October, while the actual demolition work is expected to take place from mid-August.

“It will mean there will be heavy vehicle movement in and out of the school. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”
