Tributes paid to victims of crash between Wakefield and Barnsley, which left six dead

Two children and four adults died in a collision between a car and a motorbike on the A61 on Sunday

Tributes were left at the side of a road between Wakefield and Barnsley where six people, including two children, died in a crash.

The collision was reported to emergency services at around 4pm BST on Sunday 21 July, West Yorkshire Police said.

A man, a woman and two girls, who were traveling in the Ford Focus, were pronounced dead at the scene on a country road near a golf course near the village of Mapplewell.

Another man and a woman, the motorcyclist and the passenger behind the wheel also died in the accident.

Jamie Phillips, who came to lay flowers at the scene, told {{StationName}}: “Just to be traveling down the road and for something like this to happen, it’s devastating.

“It’s devastating for all of us as a community.

“Barnsley is only small and it will affect quite a few people.”

Security Minister Dan Jarvis, who is MP for Barnsley North, responded to the collision on the A61 between Staincross, Barnsley and Newmillerdam, Wakefield, on Sunday afternoon.

Mr Jarvis told X: “Devastating news. Sincere condolences go out to the family and friends of those who tragically lost their lives.”

Superintendent Alan Travis, of Wakefield District Police, said: “This is an absolutely tragic incident which has resulted in the loss of six lives.

“Our thoughts go out to the families of those who have died who we are working with to provide support at this time.”

The road has been closed between Shaw Lane and Warren Lane and is likely to remain closed for some time, police said.
