Brits heading to France warned of £1,000 fine for not having key items

With an influx of British tourists heading to the upcoming Olympics in France, it is essential for travelers to familiarize themselves with local driving regulations to avoid heavy fines and ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. The rules across the Channel differ from those in the UK, particularly when it comes to the equipment that must be carried in vehicles.

A spokesperson for Swansway Motor Group advised: “Thousands of British sports fans are attending the Paris Olympics so it is vital that they are aware of local driving laws. Ignoring these laws could result in heavy fines, adding unnecessary stress to what should be an enjoyable trip.

“Many British tourists are unaware of France’s strict driving laws, such as the requirement for a Crit’Air sticker (clean air sticker) in low-emission zones in cities such as Paris, Lyon and Lille. As we approach the Olympics, it is more important than ever for Britons to ensure they are compliant to avoid significant penalties.”

Fines for driving in France

The spokesman added: “British drivers need to prepare themselves with the correct equipment before driving in France, penalties for using radar detectors or not having safety equipment such as vests and warning triangles can be severe, with fines reaching up to €1,500 (£1,248). Tourists heading to France for the Olympics should take extra care to understand these rules to avoid the fines that could land them.

“The Olympics will see a significant increase in the number of tourists driving to France. We advise all UK visitors to check French road laws thoroughly before their journey. Simple omissions such as using a mobile phone while driving or not having the proper documentation can lead to substantial fines.”
