Leeds United attacking midfielder Brenden Aaronson could be sold this summer regardless of the division the club end up in after a season-long battle with Union Berlin.

Leeds have their work cut out for them to take advantage of the players who swooped in in the summer window after relegation, with only a handful of them doing enough to warrant permanent moves away from their current clubs.

Brenden Aaronson headed to Union Berlin as they began their Champions League journey this season, but it was far from rosy for the USMNT man.

Leeds were expecting to lose £13m on Aaronson

Football Insider reported this week that Leeds are considering selling Aaronson regardless of what happens in their play-off campaign this month.

The 23-year-old was poor for Leeds in the 22/23 season which ended in relegation and did not shine at all during his time in the Bundesliga.

The report claims that the midfielder will be available for a potential £12m deal if Leeds want to sell him, which represents a significant drop in the fee Leeds paid for him.

Aaronson was signed in 2022 from Red Bull Salzburg for a fee of £25m, meaning a £13m cap hit will be taken.

Aaronson’s Union Berlin are staring at possible relegation this month

The weekend just past proved extremely damaging to Union Berlin’s chances of avoiding relegation this season, taking on second-bottom Köln and taking a 2-0 lead inside the first 20 minutes.

However, they conceded three to lose 3-2 in the dying moments, while Mainz beat Borussia Dortmund 3-0 at home, meaning the Union sit third and into the relegation play-offs .

With a game to play and two points adrift, it means Aaronson’s side are looking at a two-legged play-off clash against the third-placed second-placed side to decide whether they will be relegated, the team they would face is Fortuna Dusseldorf .

Aaronson a huge flop signing for Leeds

It’s fair to say that the money we put into signing Aaronson wasn’t worth it in any way, and selling him for such a loss would say it all.

If Leeds amortized Aaronson’s transfer fee over the course of his five-year deal after two seasons, it would mean anything over £15m would be considered ‘profit’ in the books.

So even at £13m we are making a loss because of that.

If he finishes this season with a second successive relegation on his CV then it is a real concern.
