“An exciting one” as homegrown talent reveals Coventry’s exciting new philosophy

Homegrown Coventry City midfielder Josh Eccles has revealed the team are working on a new “philosophy” of play this summer.

The Sky Blues have tweaked the way they have played in recent seasons, depending on personnel and playing to their strengths, while adhering to the core principles of attacking and entertaining football.

In 2022/23, City were quite direct and often used the powerful Viktor Gyokeres as an outlet to get the ball forward as quickly as possible. Last season was more about possession-based football, building attacks from the back.

Now, it seems, with the addition of more insides in Ephron Mason-Clark and Raphael Borges Rodrigues, along with forward Jack Rudoni, the team will hopefully be a multi-front threat in the final third.

“It’s an exciting one this year with the new staff and new players,” Eccles said. “It’s all about understanding and trying to work on this new philosophy that we’re trying to put forward. It’s quite interesting, actually. There is a lot of attacking football and once all the pieces come together it will be good for the fans to watch.”

Asked to elaborate on what a “new philosophy” meant, Eccles added: “As we interpret it from the back. We’re trying to get more bodies forward in the box, but obviously we’re making sure we’re safe behind the ball. We have skilled interiors with guys like Ephron coming in, and Jack Rudoni likes to get on the ball in scrimmage zones, so we have to try to use that as much as possible.
