Air Sunderland sheds light on pre-season training camp and life under Regis Le Bris

Winger Romaine Mundle is confident Sunderland can build on a strong start made by the squad in the opening weeks of the summer programme.

There are just two weeks to go until the Black Cats begin their Championship campaign, with the team facing Blackpool, Bradford City and Marseille in their upcoming pre-season friendlies before their Welsh opener against Cardiff City.

The first team recently returned from Spain for a pre-season trip which included warm weather training and friendlies against Nottingham Forest and CD Eldense, with Mundle featuring in both matches.

“It’s been a good week,” the 21-year-old told the club. “A lot of hard work with double sessions, I also had a lot of gym sessions.

“It was a tough week and with the weather. The boys had to adjust to it, but I think everyone had fun in Alicante. We’ve made the most of it with the two games we’ve had and we’re looking to carry that momentum into the next two pre-season games.”

Mundle made 11 appearances last season after signing a permanent deal in January 2024, scoring his first goal against Southampton at St Mary’s.

As he continues to make his presence felt in the squad, Mundle continued: “It’s my first pre-season with a few guys. They were all there before I got here, so it’s a chance to get to know them even better.

“We had dinner together, so it was a great chance to build relationships that we hadn’t had before. We’re still working on it, on and off the field.”

Mundle and the rest of the squad returned to the Academy of Light just under four weeks ago under head coach Régis Le Bris. In Alicante for the last seven days, Le Bris had the perfect opportunity to further cement his message to the playing squad in the context of the Championship campaign.

“We’ve had a couple of weeks with what he wants to implement,” Mundle added. “We used these games to show exactly what he wants us to do.

“I think it’s going well. We still need more to adjust, but we’ll get there and we’ll be good for it.”
