Hull City bid for star Charlie Hughes ‘with board’

Wigan Athletic boss Shaun Maloney has confirmed the board are now dealing with Charlie Hughes amid a bid from Hull City.

Wigan Athletic have seen centre-back Hughes develop into a key asset over the past 18 months and it seemed only a matter of time before a top-flight club like Hull City came along.

The Tigers are looking for a new man at the heart of defense after losing Jacob Greaves to newly-promoted Ipswich Town. It looks like Latics Academy graduate Hughes is the one they’re heading to.

Following reports of the Championship club’s interest, a £4.5m bid was said to be in place.

Now Wigan Athletic boss Maloney has been quizzed on the matter.

Speaking to Wigan Today amid persistent rumors of a Hull City swoop for Hughes, the Latics manager admitted the board are now dealing with the situation. Maloney said:

“I think when it gets to that stage, it’s with the board … Ben, Mike Danson, Lucas Danson and Gregor will make those decisions.

“Generally, I will stay on the football side with Charlie and our relationship can stay as it is. Everything else will go to the board level, which they should…they will ask for my opinion, which of course I will give when asked.

“But the board have been really good, going back to last summer when they were incredibly good, and they’ve been excellent this year and they’ll do well now.”

He would later add that he remains prepared for all scenarios. Hughes has been seen as a strong contender for the Wigan Athletic captaincy, but a move would leave Maloney with a new decision to make.

Who is this?

THE QUIZ STARTS!

A suitable substitute

Having lost a key asset and a crucial player, Hull City were always bound to turn to the transfer market to fill the void left by Ipswich Town new boy Greaves.

In Hughes, the Tigers will be getting another very impressive player who is also a great asset for the future. The youngster is expected to get better and better as time goes on and could make a sizeable profit on him in the years to come, just like they did with Greaves.

Since joining Wigan Athletic, Hughes has established himself as one of the EFL’s brightest prospects. This was reinforced by his emergence as an England youth international, one of the few to do so outside of a Premier League academy.

The 20-year-old, who is under contract until 2028, has played 75 times for his hometown club. In the process, he scored five goals and two assists, captaining the team on several occasions.

It deserves a big step up

There’s no denying that Wigan Athletic have big ambitions of their own. After a tough few years, they will be determined to fight for promotion back to the Championship this season and keeping key players for that scrap will be key.

Among those they will want to keep is Hughes. Not only is his ability vital, but the leadership and mindset he possesses at such a young age also makes him a key figure on and off the pitch.

However, over the course of 75 senior outings, he has proven himself as a player above League One level.

A move to a higher level is one that many fans expected, although not exactly wanted. Time will tell what decision is made on Hull City’s bid, but things appear to be moving forward as the Latics board weigh up their next move.
