Roy Keane delivers ‘brutal’ verdict on England defeat to Spain in Euro 2024 final

Manchester United legend Roy Keane has delivered a brutal verdict on England’s performance during their Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain.

The Three Lions were defeated 2-1 by Spain on Sunday evening at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams opened the scoring for Spain in the opening minutes of the second half.

England responded with a goal from Chelsea and former Manchester City star Cole Palmer. However, Spain regained the lead with a late goal from Real Sociedad striker Mikel Oyarzabal to hand the Three Lions a disappointing defeat.

Keane was part of the pundit team for ITV Sport, providing analysis of the match in Berlin. After the final whistle, the United legend gave a clear verdict assessing England’s performance against Spain and throughout the tournament.

“The best team won tonight,” Keane told ITV Sport. “They (Spain) were the best team throughout the tournament.

“I think tonight (England) lacked quality. They lacked quality throughout the tournament. It was probably the fight and the desire, the options on the bench that got them into this final.

“High-level sport is brutal. We lost big games, and sometimes the opposition is better than you. Spain was excellent.

“You have to step back and be humble. It’s great to win, but when you get beat by the better team, take your meds and regroup and go again…

“You go home, see your family, go on holiday, come back for pre-season in a couple of weeks. You have to go again.

“The real frustration for England will be that they gave it their all. After the game when they got beaten, they’ll be thinking, ‘Did we give it our all?’

“They didn’t give their best in the last few games, they got away with everything. In the end, they found out.”
