Nottingham Forest best and worst case scenario for key weeks of transfer window

Nottingham Forest’s approach in the first half of the transfer window has been careful and considered.

Nuno Espirito Santo spoke about finding the “right pieces” for his team. And overall, the Reds seem to have done that.

Some promising business was overseen, building on the core group Forest already had in place. Good, sensible signings have been made and supervised departures have been well thought out.

Last month’s accounting cap to comply with the Profitability and Sustainability Rules has created something of a mini transfer window for Premier League clubs. But August is generally when things really start to move — especially the closer it gets to the deadline on the 30th.

With a new month around the corner, the Reds still have a few final pieces of the puzzle to put together. Below, we take a look at the best- and worst-case scenarios for the rest of the window.

Best case scenario

The first half of the window set Forest up nicely for the rest of the summer. Five signatures have been made so far. Carlos Miguel, Elliot Anderson, Eric da Silva Moreira and Nikola Milenkovic were immediately included in Nuno’s squad, while Marko Stamenic will spend the season on loan at Olympiacos.

It could be an interesting season ahead for Nottingham Forest as they look to continue under Nuno Espirito Santo.

After back-to-back relegation battles since their return to the top flight, the Reds hope this time will be different. The aim for 2024/25 is to start in the Premier League and move up the table.

After two years back among the elite, the Reds are now well aware of the task ahead of them and the challenges they face. And while there is no doubt this particular division is taking no prisoners, there is a sense that Forest are now equipped to meet the test.

Indeed, there is plenty of reason for optimism among Reds fans. Progress is the watchword around town at the moment and the hope is that supporters aren’t biting their nails or calculating last-day survival permutations in May.

Forest showed what they are capable of during Nuno’s last tenure. Also, the Portuguese clearly had the foundations of a very good team already in place.

But pre-season really showed what could be possible with the 50-year-old at the helm. His team looked good, were keen to get on the front foot and created some wonderful passages of play.

Of course, reading too much into summer friendlies is unwise. Predicting how an unpredictable Premier League might play out is not easy at the best of times.

However, don’t underestimate how valuable uninterrupted time with his players can be for Nuno. He described pre-season as the “most important” time of the year and felt he missed out by being called up to Trentside midway through the last campaign.

Nuno has plenty of talent at his disposal as he looks to chart a course for the coming months. Players like Ibrahim Sangare have the potential to really show what they are about, the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi and Anthony Elanga are capable of making their mark again and Morgan Gibbs-White can get even better. And then there are the new autographs to add to the mix.

It will be fascinating to see if Carlos Miguel takes the No. 1 spot. Nikola Milenkovic has been brought in to try and solve the Reds’ kick-off woes. Eric da Silva Moreira looks a great find and Elliot Anderson can be an excellent addition. Additional signatures are expected to follow.
