Shops in Mansfield told not to sell ‘super-strong’ booze to ‘provocative and chaotic’ drunks

Shops in a Nottinghamshire town have been told not to sell super strong beers to “provocative and chaotic” drunks – because customers’ antics are putting people off visiting. Mansfield police have been visiting off-licences, convenience stores and other licensed premises in the town center to warn them that the sale of stronger alcohol is destroying the wider community.

Officers are working in partnership with the council’s licensing officers to restrict sales to people who are already intoxicated and to reduce sales of single cans, the force explained. Super strong beers and ciders are often around 9% ABV – more than double the potency of a typical drink.

PC Kevin Marshall, drink manager for Mansfield town centre, said the behavior of drinkers was frightening people. “We know that the sale of super hard beer and cider directly fuels violence and anti-social behavior as it is commonly consumed by some of our most challenging and chaotic residents.

“We also know that his type of behavior – including people urinating and vomiting in the street – is extremely disappointing to people visiting our city.” Nottinghamshire Police said its actions had already seen “promising results”, which included several local businesses documenting the refusal. sales and removing products from immediate view.

PC Marshall said the program would continue for the foreseeable future, adding: “On the one hand, we have made it clear to local traders what will happen to them if we catch them breaking the law and selling alcohol to people who are clearly intoxicated.

“And on the other hand, we appealed to their better nature to think about the negative impact they are having on their community in exchange for relatively small profits.”
