Sheffield United Women sign defender Abbie Lafayette

Sheffield United have signed 22-year-old attacking full-back Abbie Lafayette from former Championship side Watford.

She joined the Hornets last summer after a successful spell with Ipswich Town, earning a move to the Barclays Women’s Championship, where she made 20 appearances in the 2023-24 season.

Dangerous set pieces earned a pass against the Blades in the final term, while she scored against the London City Lionesses.

Lafayette said: “I am very excited. It’s been a really smooth transition, I’ve already met a few guys and really settled in, so everything has been great.

“Last season was a difficult season but I really think I showed my best towards the end of the season which really helped me. It’s a season I think I can be proud of and I think I can bring a lot to the team.

Head coach Ash Thompson said: “We are delighted to bring in a player of Abbie’s quality and future potential. She had a great season last year in the championship and was one of the top performers in her position.

“He is a great addition to the club and the team and will have a big impact on how we play this season.”

Spain remain the holders of all the youth women’s titles, with a late winner
