Missing 28-year-old British tourist found dead in Portugal

A 28-year-old man from the UK who went missing in Portugal has been found dead near his holiday home. Police and firefighters have been searching for the man since Friday using drones and sniffer dogs.

A body has now been found near the village of Saboia in the Algarve. The man stayed with his family.

Local reports say he had known health problems. He was staying in a holiday home close to the forest and the Mira River. Police say they are not treating the man’s death as suspicious.

The Algarve region of Portugal is a very popular destination for UK tourists. In recent years, the region has consistently attracted significant numbers of visitors from the UK. In 2022, the Algarve received an estimated 1.2 million British tourists due to the Algarve’s sunny weather, beautiful beaches and affordability compared to other European destinations.

Albufeira, Lagos and Faro are among the most visited towns in the Algarve by British tourists. Albufeira, known for its vibrant nightlife and beautiful old town, and Lagos, with its stunning coastline and rich history, are particularly favoured. Faro, as the main point of entry through its international airport, also sees a high volume of visitors.

2024 saw a number of high-profile missing person cases in Europe, with British nationals sparking major search operations. Doctor Michael Mosley died after disappearing in Greece, while Jay Slater was missing for nearly five weeks in Tenerife before police found human remains.

In June alone, Greek police launched three major operations for missing tourists from the islands. A 55-year-old tourist from the US was found dead following a search.

By the end of June, Greek authorities said at least 10 tourists had already disappeared or died while on vacation.
