Sinead O’Connor’s cause of death has been confirmed – just over a year after she died aged 56.

The Irish singer died on July 26 last year and now the cause of death has been confirmed. The Nothing Compares 2 U hitmaker was found “unresponsive” at a home in London on July 26, 2023. Thousands of mourners attended her funeral in the small coastal town of Bray in Ireland’s north County Wicklow in August last year.

Fans lined the streets and threw flowers at the passing hearse as the singer’s life was celebrated and she was laid to rest in a single plot at Deansgrange Cemetery in south Dublin. The Irish Independent has now reported, citing the Grammy winner’s death certificate, that she died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma.

The certificate said her death was the result of “exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma along with a low-grade lower respiratory tract infection,” the publication reported. Sinead’s death was registered by her ex-husband John Reynolds in Lambeth, London, earlier this week.

According to the NHS, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the name of a group of lung conditions that cause breathing difficulties, including emphysema and chronic bronchitis. It is a common condition that mainly affects middle-aged or older adults who smoke.

When it announced Sinead’s death, a statement said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have asked for privacy at this very difficult time.” Southwark Coroners Court said in early January: ‘This is to confirm that Mrs O’Connor died of natural causes. The coroner therefore ended their involvement in her death. If an inquiry is to be opened, the date of the brief public hearing will be opened. to be provided on our website.”

Just this week, Dublin’s wax museum unveiled a figure of the singer, but faced criticism from her family and members of the public that it looked “nothing like her”. They have since decided to reduce the figure as they admit that “it can be done better” and are committed to creating a “more accurate representation”.

Her brother John O’Connor said he was shocked when he first saw it online and said it looked “nothing” like her. He told RTE Radio’s Liveline: “When I saw it online yesterday I was shocked. I thought it looked something between a mannequin and something from Thunderbirds. I thought Sinead would have really enjoyed looking good, and she certainly did, and if it was meant to be a representation of her in her early 20s when she did Nothing Compares 2 U, she and it just didn’t look like her at all. I thought it was hideous.”
