Southport FC call off match ‘out of respect’ after mass stabbing

Two children have died and nine others have been injured after a major incident on Hart Street in Southport

A local football club has canceled a pre-season friendly scheduled for tomorrow night “out of respect” for the victims of today’s mass stabbing in Southport. Two children have died after a knife-wielding man walked into a Taylor Swift dance class on Hart Street and began attacking people.

Nine other children were injured, six of them in critical condition. Two adults were also seriously injured, police confirmed. A 17-year-old was arrested on suspicion of murder and suspected of attempted murder.


Following the tragic events, Southport Football Club have decided to cancel their pre-season friendly against Morecambe FC tomorrow night. A statement published online said: “In light of today’s tragic events and following extensive engagement with relevant local stakeholders, we have taken the decision to cancel tomorrow night’s Morecambe FC pre-season friendly out of respect for those who lost their lives so tragically. , and to those who will be deeply affected by this horrible tragedy.

“The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Southport FC are with those affected and our deepest condolences to all those affected. The club would like to reiterate that tomorrow the Club Lounge will be open from 10am to 3pm for those who wish to gather, share their thoughts and find support during this difficult time Specialist support staff will be on hand to provide assistance and comfort to those in need.

“For those who have purchased tickets we will provide information on refunds in the coming days.” The football club also released a statement earlier Monday, saying it had made its facilities available for the emergency effort.


It read: “Southport FC are aware of a major incident in Southport and are following developments closely. The club can confirm that we are in ongoing dialogue with Merseyside Police and have offered full use of the club’s facilities as an emergency response center if required. the thoughts of everyone at the club are with those affected by today’s events.”

Morecambe FC, who were due to play Southport tomorrow night, also addressed today’s events. It said: “Due to the horrific events that took place in Southport today, Tuesday night’s friendly has been cancelled. Everyone at Morecambe Football Club sends their deepest condolences to the victims, their families and everyone affected at this unimaginably difficult time.”
