Why the plan for 20 speed humps on 500 yards of main Nuneaton road is on hold

The brakes have been put on plans for 20 speed humps to be installed on a 500 yard stretch of main road in Nuneaton. It was being recommended that the proposals to install eight sets of speed cushions on a 500-yard stretch of Croft Road, between the junctions with The Raywoods and Greenmoor Road were given the green light.

This officer recommendation came despite a number of objections being lodged about the Warwickshire County Council plan, which is said would help reduce accidents. Among the concerns were the cost of the project as well as if the council had ‘adequately shown’ a need for these measures as the collision data shows no fatal collisions.

At the time, the council said the plan, which would have been paid for through a casualty reduction funding scheme, still needed to go ahead. However, cabinet member for transport, Councilor Jan Matecki was due to make the final decision.

At a single member meeting last Thursday (July 18), Cllr Matecki decided to defer the decision. A Shire Hall spokesperson explained: “Although the Officers recommendation was to implement the scheme as had been advertised, as a result of the number of objections received in relation to the consultation, it was decided to defer the scheme to ensure that the collision data justifies the introduction of a traffic calming scheme.”

The plan will be looked at again between February and March next year.
