‘Device’ found as road closed, police ask locals to ‘avoid area’

Police have closed a road in Warwickshire after a ‘device’ was found. Warwickshire Police say Willes Road in Leamington is closed from Newbold Terrace to Mill Road.

They are urging drivers to avoid the area. In a Facebook post, the force confirmed 999 calls had been made and the object – believed to be a historic device – had been removed from the nearby stretch of the River Leam.




As a precaution, the road was closed. The force said the explosive ordnance disposal team had been called.

It is understood the fisherman found a suspected Second World War device.

It was pulled out of the river.

An explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team was called in to assess the device.

As a result, the stretch of road is closed.

Police statement

Warwickshire Police confirmed a 999 call was made just after 2pm.

It was from a fisherman who found the device while fishing.

The police cordoned off the section of road near the river section.
