Capel Manor gardening students win gold in national competition

Pupils have created an environmentally conscious garden for the BBC World Gardeners’ Spring Fair

Pupils from Capel Manor College in Bulls Cross have won gold at the BBC Spring World Gardeners’ Fair.

Capel Manor College’s project team, led by students currently studying the Professional Gardener Diploma, led the creation of an environmentally conscious garden called ‘Come Rain or Shine’, which incorporated sustainable practices and creative solutions.

Inspired by nature-based solutions, the garden addressed climate change issues such as sustainable urban drainage, heat and water management, and plant selection for challenging conditions.

This was the first time Capel Manor College had competed in the competition, held in Hampshire.

Peter Brammall, Principal at Capel Manor College, said: “We are delighted that our students have been able to experience and compete in such a prestigious event and to see them awarded gold by the judges is fantastic, a real proof of the knowledge and skills they have honed during their college study programs.

“I know they’ve been working hard to design and execute the brief over the last few months before they get to build it and share it with the audience at the event itself. We now look forward to staging their garden design in a permanent setting in our show gardens at our Enfield campus so that the public can continue to enjoy it for years to come.”
