Kenyan families set to receive cash assistance with Ksh 140 million funding from UK

Kenyan families are set to receive cash assistance after the UK announced Ksh 140 million in funding.

In a statement shared by the UK government, the money will be transferred to UNICEF to support flood relief efforts in Kenya.

The financing will allow the provision of cash assistance to approximately 6,900 households in the most affected counties.

In addition, UNICEF will provide urgently needed health, nutrition and sanitation services through integrated activities, including the provision of safe drinking water, temporary sanitation facilities and hygiene kits to families displaced by the floods.

According to the UK government, UNICEF will also step up its cholera prevention interventions to ensure the health and well-being of those affected is maintained and to help prevent waterborne diseases.

Speaking about the emergency lifting, the British High Commissioner to Kenya, Neil Wigan noted that the rains have affected many families in Kenya. He insisted that the funding would help them greatly

“The situation facing many Kenyans as a result of the recent extreme weather and flooding is heartbreaking,” he said.

“This urgent funding from the UK will help ease the suffering of those displaced and affected by the crisis. We stand with Kenya in this emergency and continue to work closely with UNICEF, the Government of Kenya and other partners to do all we can to support the response,” he added

The UK is currently supporting 1,800 families in Tana River County and the fund will help them expand their support.
