Boost for Cornish startup tackling the problem of nylon nets

A Newlyn company has been awarded almost £50,000 by Cornwall Council’s growth center to start scaling up an idea that turns old nets into valuable products.

Fishy Filaments takes old fishnets and shreds them into tiny plastic beads that can be used in injection molding or made into a filament for 3D printers.

The company has been testing the process since it began in 2017 and now hopes to scale up the project.

It is estimated that around 200,000 tons of these nets are thrown away or burned each year globally.
