Niccol, the future CEO of Starbucks, could earn up to $113 million

But as with most CEO pay deals, most of Niccol’s earnings will come in the form of stock in the company. Around the Sept. 9 start date, Niccol will earn an equity grant worth between $75 million and $80 million. He will also be eligible for a $23 million annual stock grant, with the first installment due in Starbucks’ next fiscal year.

The stock awards will vest in full over four years, according to the filing.

Starbucks did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“The average salary for a Starbucks Barista is $49,287 per year in the United States,” according to a Glassdoor FAQ. “Salary estimates are based on 1,650 salaries submitted anonymously to Glassdoor by Starbucks-Barista employees in the United States.

Salaries have been filed since June and include payments beyond salary, such as bonuses.

Starbucks workers at hundreds of stores have been trying to win contracts, including better wages, in recent years. The company and representatives of Workers United, which organizes baristas in stores, resumed negotiations earlier this year, although no contracts have yet been agreed.

Starbucks told Fortune that Niccol’s compensation “is directly tied to the company’s performance and the shared success of all stakeholders.”

Niccol’s pay package is also significantly higher than what Starbucks offered outgoing CEO Laxman Narasimhan. Last year, Narasimhan’s compensation was worth just under $15 million, according to another SEC filing.

However, Narasimhan is to receive nearly $11 million in severance pay under Starbucks policies, according to a compensation document the company filed with the SEC.
