Perdue recalls frozen chicken after consumers found “metal wire” inside

Perdue is recalling thousands of ready-to-eat frozen chicken products after consumers found thin metal threads inside.

The company said in a statement that it is recalling more than 160,000 pounds of frozen chicken breasts, tenders and nuggets after finding “foreign material” in the frozen chicken packages. Jeff Shaw, the company’s senior vice president of food safety, said it recalled the products “out of an abundance of caution.”

The company says the objects entered products through the production line, but that no known illness has been linked to the contamination.

The three products named in the recall are Perdue Simply Smart Organic Gluten-Free Breaded Chicken Nuggets, Perdue Breaded Chicken Breast Tenders and Butcher Box Organic Free Fully Frozen-Cooked Chicken Nuggets, the company said. All recalled products have an expiration date of March 23, 2025.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said in a separate statement that Perdue notified the Food Safety Inspection Service after receiving consumer complaints about the “metal wire.”

“FSIS is concerned that a product may be in consumers’ freezers,” the USDA said. “Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products must be discarded or returned to the place of purchase.”
