Leeds United’s five record sales from 2010 to 2020

Leeds United have spent time in each of England’s top three divisions over the past decade, although the vast majority have been spent in the Championship.

Leeds United ended the decade in the Premier League but have since been relegated and are now in the midst of a play-off campaign to try and earn an instant return to the top flight.

Daniel Farke’s side drew 0-0 with Norwich City in the first leg of their play-off semi-final on Sunday afternoon and will now face the Canaries at Elland Road to fight for a place in the final.

At the moment it is not known in which league the whites will play their trade next season, but for now it is time to remember.

Here, we take a look at Leeds United’s five biggest sales from 2010 to 2020 and where they are now…

Lewis Cook

The first is academy graduate Cook, who left Leeds United in 2016 for a fee of £6m plus add-ons when he joined Bournemouth. The fee could have risen to £10m, but the initial fee is why the midfielder ranks where he is on our list.

Since joining the Cherries, the 27-year-old has made 217 appearances and earned a solitary cap for the England national team, which returned in 2018.

He remains at Bournemouth today after adding Championship promotion to his CV in 2022 and is under contract at the Vitality Stadium until next summer.

Defensive midfielder Vieira also left Leeds United in 2018 after graduating from the academy, with Italian side Sampdoria signing him for £6.2m.

The former England U21 international still plies his trade for Sampdoria, although he spent loan spells with Hellas Verona and Torino during his time with the club.

He has made 90 appearances in total, with five assists to his name, although he is yet to score and faces a play-off qualifier on Friday night as he hopes to move a step closer to a return to Serie A A. Vieira is now 25 years old and still has many years ahead of him.

Jack Clarke

Third on our list and third to come through the Leeds United youth ranks is Jack Clarke. He was signed by Tottenham Hotspur for £10m in 2019, before being promptly loaned back out.

He subsequently spent time on loan at QPR, Stoke City and Sunderland before the Black Cats signed him permanently in 2022 after making just four appearances for Spurs.

The winger made 112 appearances in total for Sunderland, becoming a star asset, scoring 27 goals and registering 22 assists.

Clarke is under contract at the Stadium of Light until 2026, although after attracting plenty of interest throughout the campaign, his future could soon lie elsewhere.

Ross McCormack

Prolific Championship striker McCormack, who left Leeds United for Fulham in an £11m deal ahead of the 2014/15 campaign.

After 38 goals in 89 league appearances, the Scotland international left the Cottagers after picking up their Player of the Season award in back-to-back seasons to sign for Aston Villa.

While with Villa his career began to falter and in three seasons he spent four loan spells away from the club with Nottingham Forest, Melbourne City, Central Coast Mariners and Motherwell.

He was released at the end of the 2018/19 campaign and has since represented Aldershot Town, Liversedge and Doncaster City, where the 37-year-old remains today.

Chris Wood

Finally, the most expensive departure from Leeds United in the last decade is New Zealand international Wood, who signed for Burnley in 2017 for £15m.

The striker has been a Premier League player since staying with the Clarets until 2022 when Newcastle United came calling.

His time with the Magpies was brief and was followed by a loan spell with Forest once the East Midlands outfit were promoted to the top flight. As part of the deal, there was an obligation to make the move permanent at the start of the current campaign.

Now 32, Wood has scored 13 goals in all competitions this season in 34 appearances for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.
