Former Trump adviser Stephanie Grisham slams Trump in DNC speech

Stephanie Grisham, who served as former President Donald Trump’s press secretary in his administration, had harsh words for the former president as she took the stage at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday in an effort to win over disgruntled Republicans and undecided voters.

Grisham was Trump’s third press secretary during the latter part of his presidency, as well as chief of staff to first lady Melania Trump. She resigned on January 6, 2021, and has since been open about her time in the administration.

The former Trump aide is one of several Republican-affiliated speakers giving speeches at the DNC this week in Chicago, as the Democratic Party tries to woo disaffected GOP voters and independents away from Trump.

Grisham made brief comments Tuesday, claiming that Trump was privately mocking his supporters.

“Behind closed doors, Trump mocks supporters — calls them ‘basement dwellers,'” Grisham said in her speech.

When reached for comment, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung pointed Business Insider to a social media post by Trump adviser Jason Miller, in which he said, “Grisham got that speech wrong.”

Grisham explicitly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, citing her dedication to country over party.

She also attacked Trump’s character, saying he lacked empathy, morality and “loyalty to the truth.” She also admitted that she never gave a press briefing, saying she didn’t want to stand behind the podium and lie.

Grisham released a bombshell memoir in 2021 chronicling his time in the chaotic Trump White House. Since then, she has regularly spoken out against Trump and his 2024 candidacy.

Kyle Sweetser, a Republican who said he voted for Trump and regularly donated to his campaigns, also spoke Tuesday, saying his opinion changed when he saw the former president’s tariff policy in action.

“I realized that Trump was not for me. It was because he was lining his own pockets,” Sweetser said. “Now I’m not on the left, period. But I think our leaders should bring out the best in us, not the worst. That’s why I’m voting for Kamala Harris.”

Former President Barack Obama is scheduled to deliver a keynote address later on Tuesday.
