Maya Jama asks King if he watches Love Island during the garden party at Buckingham Palace

Reality TV host Maya Jama baffled King Charles during a Buckingham Palace garden party to honor the creative industries when she asked if he was a fan of Love Island. The King shared a quiet moment with guests, including the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Duchess of Gloucester, amid Wednesday’s festivities.

Maya, 29, introduced herself as the Love Island presenter, saying: ‘I host Love Island. I don’t know if you watched it? It’s a reality dating show.” The king humorously replied, jokingly remarking, “One is born every minute.”

When asked about her future plans, Maya told the monarch she was going to “film young people swallowing somebody” in Spain.

The event was also hosted by celebrities such as documentary maker Louis Theroux, acclaimed director Sir Ridley Scott and artist Tracey Emin. Theroux, 53, expressed his delight at the invitation to the PA news agency, half-joking that it “must have been a mistake.”

He went on to say: “It’s illustrious company. It’s a beautiful day in a spectacular garden.” He added that he “couldn’t tell” if King Charles is a fan, but that he “would like to say he is”.

Sir Ridley, known for directing epic films such as Gladiator and Alien, was “incredibly honoured” to take part. When probed about the King’s taste in films, Sir Ridley joked: ‘I don’t know. But he has to watch something at night, doesn’t he?”.

Sir Ridley Scott was awarded a Knight Grand Cross by the Prince of Wales at a ceremony at Windsor Castle last week. The event saw a gathering of around 4,000 people from the realms of culture, art, heritage and the entertainment industry.
