RED WOMEN FINISH TITLE WINNING SEASON WITH WAKEFIELD VICTORY! – News

Barnsley FC Women capped a superb campaign with a 6-3 win at Oakwell this evening.

Jess Horsley’s side claimed a 10th consecutive win tonight to cap off a league season to remember in front of the Oakwell faithful.

The head coach was between the sticks for the first time in 23/24 due to an injury that forced out regular stopper and player of the season Ashleigh Ridsdel-Harrison.

It took 23 minutes for the first of the nine goals to arrive as Betty Cheetham struck home from the edge of the Wakefield box.

The Reds doubled their lead on the half-hour mark as Jodie Gregory fired home a 30-yard effort, giving the visiting keeper no chance.

But the visitors reduced the arrears right from the restart before their own long-range effort flew into the top corner to leave the game level at the break.

However, Barnsley would go ahead again soon after the restart when Gregory rounded the keeper to make it 3-2 before Amy Dawson added a fourth on the volley from a corner.

Gregory would claim the match ball when he grabbed his third of the night and his 21st goal of a stellar season for the teenage striker.

Wakey pulled a third goal back towards the end but substitute Nic Shaw made sure it was six of Barnsley’s best on the night when he fired a wonderful finish past the keeper from 20 yards.

The Reds were then presented with the league trophy by Barnsley legend Dorothy Hyman and received a standing ovation from over 500 supporters housed in the DX West Stand.

One more game and more trophies up for grabs this Sunday…
