Maya Jama confuses King Charles as she asks him if he’s watching Love Island

Maya Jama asked King Charles if he watches Love Island during a fun date at Buckingham Palace. The 29-year-old tried to recruit a new fan for the ITVX show during the palace meeting.

The Love Island host told the monarch what it was like to front the reality dating show. When asked what her plans were, she told King Charles how she was ready to go abroad to “film young people swallowing somebody”.

The King mingled with guests during a garden party celebrating the creative industries. He was joined by Queen Camilla, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Duchess of Gloucester on Wednesday 15 May.

Jama introduced herself as a TV presenter and said: ‘I host Love Island. I don’t know if you watched it? It’s a reality dating show.” Laughing, the King quipped in response, “One is born every minute.”

When asked about her future plans, she said: “I’m just about to go to Spain to film some young people snogging somebody.” Other celebrities at the event included documentary filmmaker Louis Theroux, Hollywood director Sir Ridley Scott and artist Tracey Emin.

Theroux, 53, said he was “very flattered” to be invited and was so shocked he thought it “must have been a mistake”. He said: “It was illustrious company. It was a beautiful day in a spectacular garden.

“I couldn’t tell if (Charles) was a fan, but I’d like to say he is.” Sir Ridley – who has directed Hollywood blockbusters including Gladiator and Alien – said he was “incredibly honoured” to have received the invitation.

When asked if King Charles was a fan of his films, he said: “I have no idea. But he has to watch something at night, doesn’t he?” Sir Ridley was made a Knight Grand Cross by the Prince of Wales during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle last week.

Around 4,000 representatives from the worlds of culture, art, heritage, film, TV, radio and fashion joined the garden party. The king donned a gray suit, pink waistcoat and top hat as he smiled at the assembled crowd as he entered the garden from the palace.

Camilla wore a pale pink fringed dress by Anna Valentine, paired with a Philip Treacy hat. She accessorized her outfit with the late Queen’s pink diamond flower brooch.

The royal couple stood at the top of the garden steps to listen to the national anthem before the crowd cheered. Charles and Camilla then greeted their guests.

Artist Tracey Emin said the Queen recognized her and remembered her work. She said: “It was wonderful. Both the King and the Queen recognize the creative arts and this was it.”
