The seven-year-old was one of many youngsters who saw all the displays at Cornwall Police’s annual event on Wednesday and seemed to be right at home.

“It felt very comfortable,” Andre said after trying on a police hat and taking off a special police vest.

Light rain didn’t dampen spirits during the first hour of the event, from 3 to 4 p.m., at the Crime Reduction and Community Partnerships office at 330 Montreal Rd. and informally referred to as the East End Station.

The four-hour meeting had visitors mixed with CPS members as well as community partners and was an opportunity to learn about specialist units and programs – and to check out some very interesting police vehicles.

What the hell was a deer doing at the event?

It was a mechanical, very real decoy that has made appearances at the open house in recent years, a tool used by Department of Natural Resources conservation officers to promote responsible and safe hunting and to combat crimes such as trespassing and poaching from a road.

“We’re here to support law enforcement and it’s an opportunity for the public to see us and see what we do,” Conservation Officer Gary Rupert said. “We work closely with the OPP and (Cornwall Police Service) – we have a great relationship with all our law enforcement partners and we do a lot of joint operations together.”

The open house event each spring is part of National Police Week, which continues through Saturday. National Police Week began in 1970, a way for the police to connect with their communities and raise awareness of the services they provide; This year’s theme is “commitment to serve together”.

Many partners were present, including representatives of the OPP, the CN Rail Police, the RCMP and the Canada Border Services Agency.
