Who is Crysencio Summerville? Leeds interview features Arjen Robben wanted by Liverpool

The likes of Jack Clarke, Jaden Philogene, Morgan Whittaker and Issahaku Fatawu all stood out – but none as impressive as Crysencio Summerville.

Summerville’s 19 goals and nine assists were key as his Leeds United the secondary bid for promotion to the Premier League. They also rank first in Expected Goals (xG) and Chances Created, and second in Shots on Goal, Dribbling Successfully in Daniel Farke’s team.

Leeds look more likely to miss out on an automatic promotion place, but the recently crowned Championship Player of the Season will be leaning on to help his side get over the line in the play-offs.

Crysencio Summerville transfer value – how much is he worth now?

According to our player valuation model, Summerville has a current estimated transfer value (ETV) of €17.9 million. This makes him one of the most valuable players in the English second tier today.

The €1.5m Leeds paid Feyenoord to bring him to Elland Road looks like an excellent deal, even more so if he plays for Holland’s Euro 2024 squad.

Leeds will be reluctant to part with their prize asset, especially if they return to the Premier League.

But with a strong interest from Liverpool among others, the Yorkshire club could be forced to collect.

Driving Leeds United’s promotion charge

Summerville can play on either wing, but began his career as a classic full-back who mostly embraced the right lane.

This season, the right-footed forward has developed into an inside forward and wide player who plays from the left and reverses into half-spaces.

The change was a revelation.

Arjen Robben’s ability to cut in from the wing and curl a shot into the far post has become something of a trademark and has seen him double his goal tally to 90 figures from the previous season.

The Championship is a big step down from the Premier League, but the improvement in the Dutchman’s overall output has been undeniable.

Summerville is in the 97th percentile for xG (0.43 per 90), highlighting his ability to get into great scoring positions. His higher xG on target (xGOT) figure of 0.47 per 90 compared to his xG shows he can back that up with a high quality of finishing.

The former Feyenoord player is also placed in the 95th percentile for goals (0.50 per 90), which is even more impressive considering his Non-penalty xG per shot figure of just 0.10 (percentile 55) indicates a lower quality of chances on average.

With the freedom given by his manager, Summerville uses his weaving runs to make things happen in the final third.

As a less physical player, he is more likely to be kicked when defenders cannot stop him. But playing in such environments throughout his youth and senior careers has made him develop technical skills and the ability to think and act faster than his opponents.

This has been key to his game-changing performances and sees him as one of the best in his position for successful tackles, moves into the final third and into the penalty area.

The impact of his change in role can also be seen in the way he creates chances for his teammates.

His ability to get into dangerous central spaces has led to a three-fold increase in his key passes (2.90 per 90) from last season, and his Expected Assisted Goals (xAG) figure of 0.30 per 90 makes him places in the top 4% of English second tier midfielders and attacking midfielders.

Summerville’s ability to find solutions to break the opposition’s defensive gridlock is why top teams such as Liverpool – who often face small gridlocks – are so keen to sign the 22-year-old.

His desire to press from the front aligns with the philosophy of top coaches.

That the Netherlands U21 international has been able to thrive in the more physical league should give him the confidence to make an even bigger impact on a bigger stage.

For now, he will focus on helping his team return to the promised land of the Premier League.
