Donald Trump is targeting young people on the internet

That’s why Trump introduced Dana White, the CEO of the youth-friendly Ultimate Fighting Championship, at the Republican National Convention. And that’s why Trump has made a series of appearances with internet celebrities beloved by young people, including Logan Paul, Adin Ross, the Nelk boys and, most recently, Theo Von.

There’s a good chance that not all of these names are familiar to you, an adult who reads Business Insider. (Though you may have seen the clip of Von explaining the appeal of cocaine to Trump this week: “Cocaine will turn you into an owl, buddy. You know what I’m saying? It’ll be your own lamp.”)

If that’s the case, let me direct you to this explainer by Max Read, which gives you a brief tour of the Trump-friendly guys that other guys like. Read’s general term for them: “dipshits.”

But I also wanted to point out Read’s discussion of Trump’s strategy, which makes a point I don’t see in other Trump/dudes discussions:

The problem with the stupid outreach strategy is that while you can make up some kind of clever logic to support it – namely, the audience for Logan Paul and Adin Ross is made up of guys who have some sort of natural affinity for Trump, but also have a low trend. voters (due to the fact that they are crazy) and a consistent media campaign among them could increase voter turnout in the dipshit community – in practice, a sizeable majority of the dipshit audience is 15-year-old boys who are in no position to vote from a legal point of view.

If you have teenage boys who aren’t old enough to vote in the family (raise your hand), then the fact that dipshits are hugely popular with teenagers who aren’t old enough to vote won’t be news to you.

But as we continue to point out here, the internet habits of young people remain a mystery to many older people. Which, again, is one of the reasons I don’t understand why YouTube is so huge.

To be fair, the exact demographic breakdown of dipshits audience isn’t readily available, in part because it’s not in YouTube’s and other platforms’ interest to be specific about these things. So we’re guessing here, as are Trump and his team. All we can say is that they seem to think it works for them.
