Live: Large fire breaks out in Penryn as residents told to keep windows closed

Local residents are being warned to keep their doors and windows closed as a fire broke out at a building site in Cornwall this morning (Thursday 16 May). A significant amount of smoke appeared to be billowing from the fire as emergency crews struggled to put it out.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to a fire at a construction site near Penryn at 12.08am this morning. Seven fire engines were sent to battle the blaze at Ponsharden Boatyard in Falmouth.




When firefighters arrived, they found a well-lit industrial building. As of 5:42 a.m., fire crews have scaled back but remain on scene to monitor hot spots.

Devon and Cornwall Police have warned local residents to keep their windows closed as “a significant amount of smoke” is billowing from the large blaze. He said: “D&C Police are assisting colleagues from Cornwall Fire & Rescue to a report of a fire at Ponsharden Boatyard near Penryn. Residents near the site could please close their windows as the fire is emitting a significant amount of smoke.”


Local road closures are also in place and a section of Main A is currently closed in both directions. Roads and traffic monitoring website Inrix reports: “Building fire at Ponsharden Boatyard on A39 Falmouth Road in both directions from Hillhead roundabout to Parade North.”

The cause of the fire is not yet known. Firefighters and police are currently in attendance.

Firefighters are monitoring hot spots

As of 5:42 a.m., several fire crews remain at the scene to monitor hot spots. A statement from the fire department said:

Crews are still monitoring hot spots.

Roads in the Ponsharden area will be closed until further notice due to appliances, crews and machinery on the motorway.

Devon and Cornwall Police are also in attendance.

“Significant amount of smoke”

Devon and Cornwall Police are also in attendance this morning. The force has warned locals to keep their windows closed as a significant amount of smoke is billowing from the fire.

Building found “well lit”

A statement from Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said at least seven fire engines were called to the scene of the fire this morning. Upon arrival, firefighters found an industrial building on the “well-lit” site.

Critical Control received a call at 12:08 a.m. for a fire in a commercial building.

On arrival the building was well lit, Falmouth crews made 5 pumps and one aerial ladder platform.

Additional crews from Tolvaddon, Helston, Newquay, Truro Community Fire Stations were mobilized to assist, two officers were mobilized and specialist vehicles were also mobilized from Perranporth and St Just Community Fire Stations.

Crews have now reduced the scale to 3 pumpers and will continue to monitor the incident throughout the night.
