A litter collection group in Sheffield dedicated to making the city cleaner has attracted more than 4,000 members on social media.

Volunteers from across the city come together in groups on a regular basis to collect the waste that contributes to the pollution of Sheffield’s land.

Iren Wadsworth has been part of the litter pick group for several years.

The domestic helper, 55, of Gaunt Road in the Gleadless Valley, said: “I thought the forest was so beautiful, someone had to do something about it, so I might as well, it makes me sad to see her”.

“As well as picking up litter and making places look better, you’re making connections with people, so it’s all positive.”

The Sheffield Litter Pickers Facebook group has over 4,000 members and is encouraging more people to get involved.

The group documents their work on Facebook and X and regularly posts updates on waste collection.

In addition to picking up trash from the streets, the group cleans forests that have been heavily impacted by trash.

Ms Wadsworth said fly-tipping was a major environmental concern the group had been trying to address for years.

Ms Wadsworth and other members of the group called for more attention to prevent litter being left in public.

She said: “When we’re out, people are very appreciative.”

“Over the years, there’s been a lot of fly tipping that hasn’t been treated for decades.”

Sheffield City Council advocates for waste management and motivates the community to recycle; supporting and encouraging litter picking by providing equipment and collecting litter bags.

Community members are encouraged to get involved and can collect free gear from 12 city libraries, including trash, disposable bags and gloves.

According to Sheffield City Council, 27.11% of 49.91 tonnes of household waste was recycled between April and June.

With Sheffield having the most trees and woodland in the UK, this comes with a high level of maintenance to keep the environment free of litter.
