Two unnamed English clubs watched the Sheffield Wednesday target in action on Thursday

Two unnamed English clubs were monitoring the Sheffield Wednesday transfer target on Thursday.

Sheffield Wednesday have a few names on their transfer radar ahead of the summer, but it seems other clubs are keen too.

Ian Poveda is one; The Owls want to re-sign the Leeds United man this summer, with his contract at Elland Road set to expire.

But reports in early May revealed that Burnley, Luton Town and Sunderland are also keen on the Colombian winger, who played 10 times on loan at Sheffield Wednesday in the second half of the 2023/24 season.

Elsewhere, Sheffield Wednesday are keen to re-sign striker Ike Ugbo, but the Owls have been urged to act quickly, with Troyes likely to want a quick sale of the Frenchman given their league situation.

And another name on the owls’ radar is Duncan McGuire; he missed out on a move to Hillsborough on deadline day, although Sheffield Wednesday are said to have kept track of the USMNT beforehand.

Duncan McGuire at Sheffield Wednesday at the latest

McGuire came close to joining Sheffield Wednesday on deadline day in February. Blackburn Rovers won the race, but McGuire would soon return to Orlando City due to a paperwork error at Rovers.

He terminated his contract at the end of this year. Orlando have made him a new offer, but it looks like he could be on the move this summer, and clubs across Europe are taking notice.

It is said that McGuire has offers from Belgium and Europe. But it has now been reported by the Lancashire Telegraph that “two unnamed English clubs” have watched the 23-year-old in action against Inter Miami on Thursday morning.

Orlando hosted an Inter Miami side with Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets in the starting XI, drawing the match 0-0 in what was a 00:30 GMT kick-off.

McGuire has scored five goals in 11 MLS outings so far this season. And he recently discussed the possibility of a summer move to Blackburn Rovers, the Lancashire club who are still monitoring his situation.

McGuire said: “It’s hard to say. It was a pretty bad mistake, a pretty bad mistake from them (Blackburn). I’d be open to having a conversation, but it would have to be a lot to get me back there.”

Sheffield Wednesday were scouting Duncan McGuire

“Unnamed clubs” means it’s impossible to say whether or not Sheffield Wednesday were present, although given their continued interest in the player it certainly seems likely.

The Owls hired Kevin Beadell as their head of recruitment at the end of last year, and he later suggested that MLS would be a league in which Wednesday would look for new talent.

So that would suggest Sheffield Wednesday’s initial interest in McGuire, the Owls could be looking at other players if they have scouts in the States right now.

Blackburn may also have been the two teams present on Wednesday. But with interest coming from across Europe and McGuire in good form, there could be top Championship clubs or even Premier League sides interested.

He remains an expensive potential signing, but a very interesting one nonetheless. McGuire could well see Wednesday’s heroics in 2023/24 and want to be involved, especially if Rohl stays.

But for now, McGuire at Sheffield Wednesday remains speculative, if not unlikely.
