Almost a 100-year-old building in Nuneaton town center is to be bulldozed

A former parish hall in Nuneaton is to be bulldozed. What was the old St Nicholas church hall, next to the Christadelphian hall on Vicarage Street, is to be demolished.

It is part of the area where Warwickshire County Council plans to create the £20m ‘Justice Walk’ development, with flats and a new library and office space. The county council received planning permission to demolish the parish hall, which was built in 1930.

A planning statement explains that the building has been empty for more than half a decade. It was the target of vandals and the fire tore it apart in 2019.

“The church hall was acquired by Warwickshire County Council as part of a wider regeneration plan for the Vicarage Street area, with the long-term plan to demolish it and make way for a new development,” explains a planning report. “The building was, until December 2017, rented by a local community organization on a temporary basis until the time of demolition.

“Following a site visit by the WCC it was deemed unsuitable to re-let due to the condition of the building and it would be more efficient to demolish the building now rather than have it fall into a further state of disrepair. then it is part of a wider development site that will be promoted to developers for development purposes.”

As part of the planning permission for the demolition, a number of conditions had to be met. These included bat surveys as well as bat mitigation projects and archaeological project design work.
