Sheffield Wednesday must consider these 3 Di’Shon Bernard replacements

Sheffield Wednesday centre-back Di’Shon Bernard is out of contract this summer after a strong campaign at Hillsborough.

Sheffield Wednesday only signed Bernard on a free transfer in the early stages of the 2023/24 season, but having only agreed a short-term deal, he could be on the move this summer.

The Star reports that Bernard has interest from elsewhere, including other Championship clubs. The Owls are understandably keen to keep him, though, after a strong season at Hillsborough.

With his contract nearing expiry and clubs queuing up, Wednesday would be wise to consider at least a few potential targets should he move on.

That said, here are three Bernard replacements Sheffield Wednesday should keep an eye on…

Josh Knight – Peterborough United

Knight has been offered a new contract from Peterborough United but is sure to have Championship fans and it would be no surprise if that tempts him away from London Road.

Sheffield Wednesday should be among those keen on the centre-back, who can comfortably operate in a back three or four. He has also been deployed at defensive midfield and right back, so he would bring some versatility and flexibility to Danny Rohl.

Knight stood out in the Posh backline in the 2023/24 campaign and once again earned a shot at second-tier football.

Antonios Papadopoulos – Borussia Dortmund

More of a left-field suggestion, but one that could see Rohl use his German links.

Papadopoulos, 24, has played much of his football with Borussia Dortmund II but has also tasted Bundesliga action with their first team, playing eight times for the German giants.

He looks set and ready to let go away from Dortmund as his deal comes to an end and he shouldn’t be short of suitors. Having tested himself in the Bundesliga, a move to the Championship with a German coach like Sheffield Wednesday could be ideal as he prepares to take the next step.

Who is this?

THE QUIZ STARTS!

Michal Helik – Huddersfield Town

Not least is Michal Helik, who could be an ambitious target given his stellar season for relegated Huddersfield. Their relegation to Ligue 1 may make him more affordable, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Polish star goes for a decent fee this summer.

He is well above the third level and should definitely be on the move this summer. A move to Sheffield Wednesday would mean a stay in Yorkshire, so perhaps that could work in the Owls’ favour.

Helik is a towering presence and a strong leader at the back. His nine-goal return this season will not go unnoticed.
