Leeds Rhinos have signed Warrington Wolves winger Matty Russell on a surprise loan deal

Leeds Rhinos have confirmed the loan signing of Warrington Wolves winger Matty Russell as the Headingley club look to fix their outside back injury crisis.

It is the second time Matty Russell has left the Halliwell Jones Stadium on loan this season, with the Scotland international previously making the switch to join Hull FC at the start of the season.

Leeds Rhinos have had plenty of injuries this season, but it’s their outside backs who have been hardest hit, with foreign winger David Fusitu’a set to be on the sidelines for a long time, former star at the New Zealand Warriors making just one appearance this season. before returning to the injury list.

Young starlet Riley Lumb shone on debut as he scored two tries against Hull FC, but within minutes of his second appearance, the winger picked up a thigh injury and is now also on the sidelines.

Ash Handley has been in and out of the wars with a rib injury most recently knocking him out, however he seems to be on form these days. Meanwhile, centre-backs Harry Newman and Paul Momirovski have both missed games and are sidelined, which is why Russell’s signing is so important for Leeds Rhinos.

The club confirmed the short-term deal via social media.

Their statement read: “Leeds Rhinos have signed Scotland international winger Matty Russell on loan from Warrington Wolves.

“The 30-year-old will move to AMT Headingley initially by the 11thth July before the Leeds v Warrington game. Russell has scored 151 tries in 212 career games and is drafted into the Rhinos with David Fusitu’a and Riley Lumb both released through injury for Rohan Smith’s side. “

Leeds Rhinos head coach Rohan Smith said: “I would like to welcome Matty to Rhinos. He has a good work rate and always finds yards when taking the ball back for his team. It is a good opportunity for us to add an experienced player to our group. At the beginning of the season, we always knew that the depth of our team came from our young players and it was important to give them a chance to build their experience. But with Riley Lumb ruled out for a few weeks, bringing in Matty on loan means we can add experience while continuing to carefully develop our next generation of players.”

Leeds Rhinos chief executive Gary Hetherington added: “I would like to thank Warrington for allowing Matty to join us on loan. He will slot right into our team and I’m looking forward to seeing him perform for us with his experience and try for the scoring record.”

Matty Russell, who will wear team number 35, added: “I’m really excited to come to the Rhinos and get the opportunity to get some game time. I know Leeds have had some injuries to their wings so my agent got in touch and suggested the move would be good for everyone and I’m pleased the move has happened. I am grateful to Warrington for giving me the chance to join the Rhinos on loan.”
