Denis Betts spoke to Wigan TV ahead of Sunday’s Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup semi-final against Leeds Rhinos.

Reflecting on the season so far, which sees Wigan unbeaten in seven games in the Betfred Super League and Challenge Cup, the head coach said: “I’m quite happy, we haven’t lost a game. There have been some ups and downs, the wins are great, but the key things we look at are how competitive we are, how hard we work for each other and how committed we are.

“We’re going to have some big challenges this year, winning games is just a result of what we do every week, so at the moment I’m really happy. The girls are fantastic – they’re committed, they want to get better, they’re on time, they work hard and I can’t ask for more than that.”

Looking ahead to Sunday’s semi-final, Betts said: “The physicality, the competitive element of it will be through the roof, but it’s not a bad place to be.

“I expect a very difficult match, I think Leeds is the best team in the competition. They have a great group of girls who work really hard for each other, you can tell that they have a good cohesion within the group and an understanding of each other.”

He added: “Our challenge is to go after them, be competitive in the game and be fearless in our own approach.”

The Warriors are 80 minutes away from a place in the final at the iconic Wembley Stadium. On the prospect of playing under the Arch, he said: “To be able to play a double-header at Wembley Stadium in a Challenge Cup final is a master stroke in the game.

“Hopefully we can get there, I’d like it to be this year and if not then it will be in the future. We’re in a good place at the moment and we’re going to attack this game like every game this year with a bit of steel.”

Finally, the Warriors Women boss informed about some injuries in the squad: “We expect Eva (Hunter) to be available again in the next few weeks, she is working really hard. Molly (Jones) is the same, halfway through recovery from collarbone surgery. Both will be great additions to bring back into the team fray when they are fit.”
