Alex Berenguer and five more Leicester City free agents could be signed this transfer window

Marc Albrighton, Christian Fuchs, Esteban Cambiaso. All Leicester City icons and none of them cost the club a penny in transfer fees.

City have proven before that there are excellent players to be signed in the free transfer market and that may have to be an area they operate in this summer. With financial compliance concerns, any way they can strengthen Enzo Maresca’s squad while spending less should be considered. Here we find six players who will be free agents this summer and who could pique City’s interest.

Alex Berenguer

City were this week named as one of a handful of English clubs keeping tabs on Athletic Bilbao winger Berenguer as his contract comes to an end. Talks are ongoing with the Basque club and Berenguer said last year that he wanted to stay, but with no deal in place and the end of the season apparently, it seems other clubs are more interested.

With Stephy Mavididi, Abdul Fatawu and Kasey McAteer, City could probably do with another full-back for the new season. Berenguer looks like a good bet in this regard as he can play on both sides and has plenty of top-flight experience in Spain and Italy. This season he has contributed eight goals and three assists in all competitions, while he has been a consistent performer over the last few years with no injury-hit or out-of-form seasons.

Stefano Sensi

He is the man Enzo Maresca wanted so desperately in January, to the point where the club’s inability to complete a deal with Inter Milan was a bee in the Italian’s bonnet for the rest of the season. But now City don’t have to involve Inter at all.

At his best, Sensi is an exceptional passer of the ball and would be someone who can make a difference in Harry Winks’ role or further down the line. But so much of his recent career has been blighted by injury that even a free transfer would be a gamble.

Callum O’Hare

Attacking midfielder O’Hare has been offered a new deal at Coventry but is yet to sign it as he waits to see if any Premier League interest arises. It wouldn’t be out of the question for Leicester to make a bid.

With the departure of Dennis Praet and the return of Yunus Akgun to Galatasaray, they need to strengthen their attacking midfield this summer and that is without considering the fact that Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall could be sold. O’Hare’s qualities and attacking prowess mean he looks ready to step up.

He has registered 14 goals and assists in the Championship and FA Cup this season. But that’s with missing the first few months due to injury and then needing a few more to get back up to speed after a long layoff with a torn cruciate ligament. He had a goal involvement rate of one every 149 minutes, just ahead of Dewsbury-Hall, who had one every 143 minutes this season.

Che Adams

Kelechi Iheanacho could leave and there is no certainty over Patson Daka, who could land the move he came so close to securing last summer. In this case, a new striker will be needed.

As someone who can express himself but also has an eye for goals, Adams would offer something different to Jamie Vardy. Plus it would be great to bring home a local boy, the 27-year-old growing up in Thurnby Lodge. However, it looks like Wolves are the first to take him from Southampton at the moment.

Steven Alzate

Now back at Brighton after Standard Liege cut his loan, Colombia international Alzate could be a decent choice in midfield. He hasn’t been as good this season, but last term at Liege he proved to be very good at passing and dribbling the ball in advanced areas. He is also still only 25 and may feel he has something to prove in the Premier League without having had an extended chance at Brighton.

Ross Barkley

The exact length of Barkley’s Luton contract is unknown, but the Hatters’ near-confirmed relegation is expected to see the England international leave Kenilworth Road. And if so, he has more than proved his quality in the Premier League again this term and should find a new club quickly.

Five goals and four assists in the Premier League for a struggling club like Luton is not to be sniffed at. At times it seems like every good attacking move Luton have made has come from Barkley in some way.

He may be 30 now and may have struggled at Chelsea, but the player who shone so brightly at Everton is certainly still there. He would be a good signing for anyone who can get him.
