Wayve and Uber partner for self-driving

Wayve, a self-driving AI software specialist, has announced a strategic partnership with Uber.

Uber also agreed to make a strategic investment in Wayve as an extension of the company’s previously announced Series C fundraising round.

With the additional funding and support from Uber, Wayve says it plans to accelerate its collaboration with OEMs worldwide to enhance consumer vehicles with Level 2+ advanced driver assistance and Level 3 self-driving capabilities, working in the same time to develop a globally scalable autonomous Level 4 system. vehicles for future deployment on Uber.

Different from traditional AV approaches, Wayve says it is uniquely focused on end-to-end mapless AI technology designed to enable automated vehicles to operate without geographic boundaries.

Wayve said the partnership “envisages future self-driving vehicles powered by Wayve to be made available on Uber’s network in more markets around the world,” bringing Wayve’s technology to Uber’s more than 150 million monthly users worldwide.

Alex Kendall, co-founder and CEO of Wayve, said: “Wayve is building a ‘general purpose’ driving Al that can power all levels of driving automation in any type of vehicle, anywhere in the world. I’m excited to team up with Uber, the world’s largest mobility network, to massively scale up the learning of our AI fleet, ensuring our AV technology is secure and ready for global deployment across the Uber network. Together, we are excited to work with OEMs to bring self-driving technologies to consumers sooner.”

Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber, said: “Uber and Wayve share a vision to reimagine mobility for the better. Wayve’s advanced embedded AI approach holds a lot of promise as we work towards a world where modern vehicles are shared, electric and autonomous. We’re excited to bring Wayve on board as a partner to work alongside automakers as we continue to build Uber as the best network for self-driving vehicles.”

Founded in 2017, Wayve describes itself as the leading developer of “Embodied AI” technology for automated driving. Advanced AI software and basic models for autonomy are said to enable vehicles to perceive, understand and navigate any environment, increasing the use and safety of self-driving systems.

Wayve develops mapless and hardware-agnostic Embodied AI products for automakers and fleet owners, accelerating the path from assisted driving to automated driving. Wayve is backed by investors including SoftBank Group and NVIDIA.
