A crowd of 250 guests at a ballroom at Best Western Parkway Inn was told that MacDonald’s aims to represent Canada at international events, and the 16-year-old Grade 11 student from St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School he was praised for his many hours of practice and training in the sport each week.

MacDonald, who earlier in the evening was named skater of the year, signed the city book 13 months ago after a major accomplishment that winter in Calgary, Alta., where he and his ice dance partner, Amélia Dufour-Saysourinho , of Coteau-du -lac, Qué., placed fourth at the 2023 Canadian Novice Championship.

MacDonald walked away Wednesday with one of the “big seven” awards that wrap up the Lions event each year.

Other major award winners included Gerry Sommerville, past president of the Cornwall Minor Hockey Association, who received the Benson Group Friends of the Round Table Lifetime Achievement Award.

“Wow, all I can say is thank you,” said an emotional Sommerville, who, after graduating from CMHA in 1988 as a player, began what would be a nearly two-decade career in officiating.

The married father-of-four thanked his wife for her support over the years – and for all those hours spent in the arenas. Sommerville’s volunteering with the association actually began when he was just a teenager. His commitment to youth sports included serving as president of Cornwall Optimist Minor Ball Hockey for 30 years and coaching bowling for 15 years.

Ella Dickson, winner of the $500 RBC scholarship, is playing 10 varsity sports at St. Louis this 2024-2025 school year. Joseph’s, from basketball, soccer and volleyball to frisbee and golf.

The Bill Bray Scholarship of $500 was awarded to Morgan Woods and Victoria Brouillet was named the recipient of the Ian Brodie Scholarship of $250, the Joe St. Denis of the Parks and Recreation Department being presented to Reed Camplin who was a member of the Cornwall Minor Football Association. since the age of seven.

The major awards followed dozens of trophy presentations in individual sports, including 20 students as part of the RBC Financial Group High School Honors. One of the highlights was Makenna Bellsmith, who is legally blind, winning the girls’ high school hockey award.

Master of Ceremonies Bill Swinden noted a likely first for the event: a husband and wife both winning in the same sport at the same dinner. Dan Contant was named the winner of the men’s triathlon and seconds later his wife Sandra Marton Contant was called to the podium to receive the women’s triathlon trophy.

Also, the audience he oohed and aahed when the incredible pursuits and results of Best Runner Award winner Sebastian Warner were read out; Warner left the audience laughing and buzzing when he smiled at the podium for a short acceptance speech and said “thanks to the Lions Club for a great night (and) I’m not going to tell you why I’m running.”
