Another bus in Mississippi blows a tire and crashes, killing 7 and injuring 37

BOVINA, Miss. (AP) — Seven people were killed and dozens injured in Mississippi after a commercial bus overturned on Interstate 20 early Saturday, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Six passengers were pronounced dead at the scene and another died at the hospital, according to a news release. The bus was traveling west when it left the highway near Bovina in Warren County and overturned. No other vehicles were involved.

The accident was caused by tire failure, the National Transport Safety Council said on social media platform X. The bus was operated by Autobuses Regiomontanos. A woman who answered the phone from his office in Laredo, Texas, said she was aware of the crash but would not answer questions or provide her name.

The transit company says it has 20 years of experience providing cross-border travel between 100 destinations in Mexico and the US. Its website touts “a modern fleet of buses that receive daily maintenance” and offers “specially priced journeys for working people”.

A 6-year-old boy and his 16-year-old sister were among the dead, according to Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey. They were identified by their mother. Authorities were working to identify the other victims, he said.

Thirty-seven passengers were taken to hospitals in Vicksburg and Jackson. The department is continuing its investigation and has not released the names of the deceased. No other information was immediately provided.

The crash came five months after another charter bus blew a tire and crashed into a barrier in southern Mississippi, injuring 11 people.
