AMD lost market share in Server Instances, while Intel gained – Investing.com reports

Investing.com — Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: ) saw a slight decline in server case market share in July, according to a note from Jefferies on Thursday.

The report points out that AMD lost 10 basis points (bps) of share, while Intel (NASDAQ: ) posted gains, capturing 72.8% of the market, thanks to the success of its Sapphire Rapids processors and other offerings.

Jefferies pointed out that Intel’s Sapphire Rapids processors were particularly strong, contributing to Intel’s incremental share growth of 39.1%, up from 18.1% in June.

Additionally, they note that other Intel products also contributed to its market share growth, with incremental share reaching 15.9% in July, a notable improvement over June’s flat performance.

On the other hand, AMD’s “processor-only incremental share (was) weak against INTC,” Jefferies said.

While the total number of CPU-only instances increased by 0.6% month-over-month, AMD’s share increased by only 0.2%, significantly less than the 2% increase seen in June.

As a result, they say AMD’s overall market share fell slightly from 21.2% in June to 21.1% in July, with particular weakness in its Genoa processors.

“The incremental share in Genoa was 1.2%, compared to 12.2% in June, similarly the lowest data point reported in the same period,” the firm adds.

Despite the difficulties in the CPU instances, AMD managed to gain 10 bps in the AI instances alongside AWS. Meanwhile, Nvidia (NASDAQ: ) saw a decline in Dedicated Accelerator instances, losing 10 bps of market share.

Overall, Intel’s momentum, led by Sapphire Rapids, helped it overtake AMD in the server instance market in July, according to Jefferies.
