Leeds Rhinos sign Matty Russell to cover their back injury crisis

Leeds Rhinos have strengthened their squad with the signing of Scotland international Matty Russell. The winger has joined Leeds on a four-week loan from Warrington Wolves in a move that gives the club depth at outside backs at a time when the club are struggling on the injury front.

The likes of David Fusitu’a, Paul Momirovski and Riley Lumb are all currently injured, while Ash Handley and Harry Newman have also dealt with injuries. Russell looks set to make his debut for the club when they play St Helens a week on Friday.

Russell, 30, who is understood to be a transfer target for Wakefield Trinity next year, has had a string of clubs throughout his career, one which has seen him score 151 times in 212 appearances . It will be his second loan spell of the season after playing for Hull FC earlier in the year.

“I would like to welcome Matty to the Rhinos,” said head coach Rohan Smith. “He has a good work rate and always finds yards when he takes the ball back for his team. It is a good opportunity for us to add an experienced player to our group.

“Going into this season, we’ve always known that the depth of our squad comes from our young players and it’s important to give them a chance to build their experience. But with Riley Lumb out for a few weeks, bringing Matty on loan means we can add experience as we continue to carefully develop our next generation of players.”

Russell added: “I’m really excited to come to the Rhinos and get the opportunity to get some game time. I know Leeds have had some injuries to their wings so my agent got in touch and suggested the move would be good for everyone and I’m pleased the move has happened. I am grateful to Warrington for giving me the chance to join the Rhinos on loan.”
