The first thing Mira Murati’s mom asked on ChatGPT is hilarious

  • Mira Murati is the influential chief technology officer of OpenAI.
  • Murati, an engineer, was instrumental in the development of ChatGPT and Dall-E 2 in 2018.
  • During Cannes Lions, Murati shared his mother’s first hilarious reaction to ChatGPT.

Many people are surprised by ChatGPT capabilities. Even the families of OpenAI’s top employees.

In a recent interview at Cannes Lions 2024, a gathering for creative and communication professionals, Mira Murati, CTO OpenAI said her mother’s first question on ChatGPT was, “When will Mira get married?”

Murati’s sister, who was guiding their mother through that first meeting, replied, “Well, Mom, it’s not magic. It’s still artificial intelligence,” Murati said.

Murati’s conclusion was that ChatGPT is a skilled conversationalist. “She had such a natural interaction with him that she thought she could ask anything,” Murati said.

Murati, 35, graduated from Dartmouth College with a degree in mechanical engineering. After a stint at Tesla and Leap Motion, she joined OpenAI as a researcher in 2018 and helped teams build their flagship products, such as ChatGPT and the Dall-E 2 image generator. She also served on briefly as interim CEO of the company during The surprise ouster of Sam Altman last year.

For the curious, we also asked ChatGPT when Murati will get married. Here’s what the bot had to say:

“There is no public information about Mira Murati’s personal plans, including if or when she plans to marry. Like many public figures, she tends to keep her private life out of the spotlight.”

Fair enough.
