The mother was found guilty of drugging her daughter so that her boyfriend would rape her

A mother has been found guilty of drugging her six-year-old daughter and conspiring to have her boyfriend come to their house so he could rape the child. The defendant, who cannot be named to protect the identity of her child, went on trial at Truro Crown Court this week.

Following a four-day trial in Truro, after just over two hours of deliberation, the jury unanimously found her guilty on all five counts. After returning a verdict, Judge Robert Linford said there was “absolutely overwhelming evidence” in the case and the defendant’s actions “defy reasonable belief”.

Judge Linford, addressing the defendant, said: “You were convicted by the jury on the absolutely overwhelming evidence of every charge in this indictment. These are crimes that absolutely defy common sense.” She will be sentenced for her crimes in August.

Judge Linford continued in his remarks: “You put up a fight in this case. That was entirely your right. But it shows that you were prepared to put off the time when you had to deal with the offending.” He said the defendant, who has been on bail until now, will remain in custody and will be sentenced by him on August 6 at Plymouth Crown Court.

He then addressed the jury saying that because of the difficult nature of the case, if they are called for jury service within the next ten years, they have a right to be excused from that duty if they want to be. “Thank you very much for your care and attention to this case,” he told jurors.

“We (court staff and lawyers) deal with these things day in and day out. But even for us this was a bad one and so we are very grateful that you were prepared to judge and handle this type of case was not easy.” He also thanked the police service for what he described as a “badass” handling of the case and the investigation.
