Casting is open for a new Harry Potter. Here’s how to audition:

Millennials, get ready. A Harry Potter remake is in the works at HBO, and the search is on to find the star to lead the show.

Child actors between the ages of 9 and 11 are invited to an open casting call where directors will be looking for the next generation to take on the roles of Harry Potter and his best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.

The three actors who previously landed these roles became household names thanks to the success of the eight Potter films released between 2001 and 2011, which grossed $7.7 billion at the worldwide box office.

Daniel Radcliffe, who rose to fame playing “the boy who lived” at the age of 12, is now worth an estimated $110 million.

Rupert Grint – who played the “red hair and a robe” Weasley – is worth an estimated $50 million.

And Emma Watson, who played the fiercely intelligent Granger, is now believed to be worth $85 million.

For kids who land the roles of the Gryffindor trio, fame surely awaits them. But Radcliffe, Grint and Watson have been candid about how intense international attention affected their childhoods.

Radcliffe said he wouldn’t wish fame on his own child, saying Newsweek in 2022: “Film sets are wonderful places. I think it can often be wonderful for children. But it’s really the part of fame that should be avoided at all costs.”

Radcliffe, now 35, has been open about using alcohol to cope with the pressure. Although he never drank on set, Radcliffe said Outside the room in 2019, he could identify scenes where he was drunk, but he never regretted taking the opportunity to play Potter.

Being Ron and Hermione

Grint and Watson both said they considered leaving the franchise during filming, but have very fond memories of their teenage days on set.

In a 2022 documentary that reunited the stars of the franchise, Watson said she was “lonely” during filming, with Grint adding that he considered “calling it a day”.

Talking to the British Vogue in 2022, Watson said it was “heaven” to be back on the set of Hogwarts and reunited with her cast mates. Watson added that she and Radcliffe are trying to “calm their nerves” in the face of Potter’s attention, adding: “We both mainly try to stay out of the limelight, so it was nice to have each other’s support.”

Both Radcliffe and Grint now have children of their own—the latter with fellow star Georgia Groome, Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging fame.

said Grint, answering Ron’s name as if it were his own bustle in February: “I live a fairly normal existence.

“I always felt like there was this expectation for us to go out of our way, to follow the child star stereotype. It was always something to fight against.”

Finding the next trio

For the HBO series to be filmed in the UK between 2025 and 2026, only children from the UK and Ireland will be considered for roles.

They must be between the ages of 9 and 11 and apply with the support of a parent or legal guardian.

Applicants are asked to submit two videos. The first is a reading of a poem or story they like, but nothing from Harry Potter.

The second is a video about the actor himself, including his date of birth, height and where he lives. In this video, applicants are also asked to describe a family member, friend or pet they are “especially close to”.

Applicants should record their documents in their own accents.

The author of the Harry Potter books, JK Rowling, will act as one of the series’ executive producers. David Heyman, who produced all the films, is also an executive on the project.
