Everything you need to know about a potential Christmas Chronicles 3 on Netflix

The Christmas Chronicles 3 has yet to be officially announced by Netflix, so we have no idea if Kurt Russell’s Santa will return.

The previous two films were huge hits for the streaming service, with the sequel, The Christmas Chronicles 2, notching up 61 million viewers in its first month. Both the first film and the sequel have become annual holiday rewatches as part of Netflix’s Best Christmas Movies and consistently climb back up the most-watched lists each year.

So far, the only promising update given to fans is the cast’s willingness to return.

“I would be interested in doing the third one. I would love to work with everyone again,” young actor Darby Camp revealed to PureWow in November 2020.

At the same time, Russell wasn’t sure a third film was warranted, but seemed open to the idea – despite not initially being “big for a sequel”.

“Now, sequels aren’t even sequels anymore. We’ve just cyclically found our way into doing television. You go to the movies and you watch television because it has a serial aspect to it,” he told The New York Times. .

Unfortunately, it’s been nearly four years since those interviews, and Netflix hasn’t provided updates on three, so it seems unlikely it’ll ever happen.

Even so, we’re not giving up hope of seeing Santa again for a new Christmas movie! Here’s everything you need to know about The Christmas Chronicles 3.

Christmas Chronicles 3 Potential Release Date: When can we expect The Christmas Chronicles 3?

As mentioned above, The Christmas Chronicles 3 hasn’t been confirmed by Netflix since May 2024, so we don’t have an official release date.

We were hoping to enjoy the third film by now, considering the first film came out in November 2018 and the sequel in November 2020. However, if we do get a triquel, the earliest we can expect be November 2025.

The Christmas Chronicles 2 was announced in December 2019 ahead of its November 2020 release, meaning Netflix might only need a year to make a new movie. We need confirmation of the third film by the end of the year, though, to make sure it’ll be with us for the next festive season.

Cast Christmas Chronicles 3: Who Would Return in Christmas Chronicles 3?

It wouldn’t be The Christmas Chronicles without Kurt Russell as Santa and Goldie Hawn as Mrs. Claus, so they’ll both be back in a potential third film.

I could see Julian Dennison returning as Belsnickel after he broke the human curse at the end of the sequel and was turned back into an elf after seeing the error of his Christmas-ruining ways.

Darby Camp and Judah Lewis reprise their roles as Kate and Teddy Pierce in the sequel, but it seems their story is now over after Kate reconciles with her mother’s new boyfriend (played by Tyrese Gibson).

We imagine a third film, if it happens, could see some new kids involved in a festive adventure, but for now it’s just speculation.

Christmas Chronicles 3: What could The Christmas Chronicles 3 be about?

Unlike the first film which ended with the debut of Mrs. Claus, the sequel didn’t end with any teasing about what the next film might be.

This could mean that this is seen as the end of The Christmas Chronicles, but if Netflix confirms another movie, it wouldn’t be too hard to continue the story, as we saw next, that Santa has a lot of Chronicles books that say all his stories.

What they might be is unclear at this point, but the sequel also delved into Santa’s past, showing his origin story from 312 AD. The three could very well go back in time to tell a story from his past.

“There was a little technology, but I’d say 75 percent of it was makeup,” writer-director Chris Columbus told Insider. “It was kind of the same thing they did in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie where Kurt was. He had the same make-up person.”

A similar approach could be taken for the third film if they wanted to go into the past, but since he’s Santa Claus, they could make Russell look like him and we’d buy it In continuation.

Despite not knowing what might happen in a potential third film, Darby Camp had a request. “If we get a third one, I’d love to see (Kate) driving the sled by herself,” she told PureWow in November 2020.

“I noticed in the first and second that Kate didn’t get to drive the sled. She rode the sled, but she never got to drive the sled—like hold the reins and say, “Dasher! On Dancer!,” she explained.

It’s not a plot, but it’s something to work on!
