Why Perugia is the best place to visit in Italy, better than Rome

  • After traveling to many of Italy’s most visited cities, I stayed in a less popular one: Perugia.
  • Perugia is only a two-hour drive from Rome, but it didn’t feel as overrun with tourists.
  • The historic city was full of culture and I enjoyed the outstanding local cuisine.

After visiting some of Italy’s hot spots like Rome, Venice, and Florence, I wanted to visit a less visited city that a friend recommended to me: Perugia.

The city, which is only about a two-hour drive from Rome, is the capital of the Umbria region in Central Italy.

Although it is often overlooked in favor of more popular tourist destinations, we found that Perugia has just as much to offer.

Here’s what my trip was like and why I think this underrated location should be on everyone’s travel bucket list.
