Why apartments are better than hotels and Airbnbs, says solo traveler

Before venturing to Porto, I had never heard of an apartment hotel. Now that I’ve experienced one, I can’t see myself going back to any other accommodation.

They practically combine the features and amenities of a boutique hotel with the space and comfort of a fully furnished apartment.

When I travel alone, I usually choose hotels or hostels because I like having people around me. Sometimes I choose apartments on Airbnb because I like having a kitchen and a bigger space at home.

When I checked into my first aparthotel, the Village by BOA, I was pleasantly surprised to find the best of both worlds. I had the amenities and sense of security that I find in hotels, plus a comfortable and spacious apartment, just like I would find on Airbnb.

Plus, my stay was about 180 Euros (about $199 USD) per night, which felt on par with what I expected to pay for a stay in the area.

The spaces were extremely comfortable and the aparthotel came with amenities

Village by BOA consists of five buildings right next to the historic center of Porto. It is surrounded by serene outdoor spaces, so it was easy to forget that I was in the heart of one of the busiest cities in Europe.

Like hotels, many aparthotels have standardized rooms.

My comfort duplex had a large living room with a sofa, a smart TV, a fully equipped kitchen and a dining table. The top floor of my space had a queen bed and a full marble bathroom.

The property also had a shared garden space and amenities I would expect to find at a hotel, such as daily housekeeping and a pool.

Although aparthotels vary, many have perks like breakfast service and an on-site fitness center.

I felt safe and welcome throughout my stay

With shared spaces and private rooms with living areas and kitchen facilities, aparthotels really are the best of both worlds.

Honestly, I would have been happy without having to leave the apartment.

To me, the property felt like a luxury co-living space, but with more privacy. I loved having my own room, but also having access to comfortable common areas that felt much more welcoming than a typical hotel lobby.

As a solo traveler, I felt even safer with other people around me.

During my stay, I met many locals who work on the property and other travelers. If I felt lonely, I would walk to the common outdoor area to see my neighbors.

I see aparthotels becoming particularly popular over the next few months, especially given the increased interest in solo travel throughout 2024.
