Trump ‘safe’ after shots fired near Florida golf course

Former President Donald Trump was unharmed after shots were fired near his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday, according to his campaign and the US Secret Service.

“President Trump is safe following the shootings in his neighborhood. There are no further details at this time,” Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement.

No further details from the campaign were provided.

The incident occurred at the Trump International Golf Club at approximately 2 p.m. ET, according to the Secret Service.

Associated Press sources said Sunday that a Secret Service agent opened fire on a suspect who had a gun while Trump was on the golf course.

“The former president is safe. We will have more details soon,” the agency said.

Trump issued a statement on Sunday regarding the incident.

“There have been shootings in my neighborhood, but before the rumors start to get out of hand, I wanted you to hear this first: I’M OK AND I’M FINE!” he said. “Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER surrender! I will always love you for standing by me. Unity. Peace. Make America great again.”

The person or persons responsible for the shooting have not yet been identified.

The incident came months after an assassination attempt on Trump in July during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. It comes as the Secret Service has come under scrutiny for its handling of the earlier incident in which the former president was injured in the ear.

Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump’s Democratic opponent in the 2024 presidential election, strongly condemned the latest shooting on Sunday.

“I have been made aware of reports of shots fired near former President Trump and his property in Florida, and I am glad he is safe,” she said in a statement. “Violence doesn’t happen in America.”
